I have a 3870. I don't know if the batteries work the same, so
hopefully someone with a 39xx can tell you. You may want to look for
the hardware support pages on handhelds.org to see if there is any
39xx-specific information.

On a 3870, the battery will drain too completely to allow it to boot,
if you leave it long enough, or refuse to let it suspend when the
battery is low. I've gotten it into this state a couple of times. The
device can't draw power from the charger until after the kernel is up
and running, so this is a really stupid hardware design, IMO. It
generally works to leave it in the charger in this situation. The
device trickle-charges then, even if it is off, and it will have
enough power to boot the kernel and start charging properly after a
while (sometimes several days).
