I had this problem, too, for a long time with my 3870 (opie, familiar).
After a week of charging, I had once enough, and really searched a last time
for a solution: And I found it! If the battery is completely discharged and
nothing happends when putting the ipaq in the cradle then the following
helped with me: press the first (left, calendar) button and the last (right,
small arrow) button to the same time and (to the same time) press with your
stylus the reset button, and do that for about five seconds. After that, the
Ipaq started here with me suddently as soon as I put it into the cradle...
