Issues with gpe-dm

I am using a h3650 ( on a fairly fresh slate, hosed my previos install by running out of disk space...)
and when I try to ipkg instal gpe-dm I get errors about running out of memory... Is this a known feature? I tried to run ipkg install gpe it too bobms with memory issues. I assume there
is a reference to gpe-dm causing this. Am I doing somthing wrong.

I am in the middle of manually getting varios gpe programs and I have a couple of oddities:

1) the default layout of the screen is landscape(though the gpe-conf is reporting I am in portrait mode, I am not portrait) and I have to change to landscape (right) to fix it!
2) my windows have not blue bar or rezising features
3) my cursor is still the x when Xserver first starts.
4) I have no bottom task bar

I am positive this has to do with my trying to hobble the system together...just need some help setting it straight...
