Trying out the GTK2-based stuff?

I am confused.

I want to take a look at the GTK2-based apps. So I got a
bare 0.6.1 (no ui stuff), changed the feed to unstable,
"ipkg upgraded" to unstable, and then installed libgtk2.0
and a bunch of things like gpe-login2, gpe-appmgr2, gpe-
calendar2, and so on. Question: what is the step I am
missing? Because none of the stuff wants to work, neither
locally nor even if I set DISPLAY to point to my desktop X
server. (Btw: I need an X server on the iPAQ, right? But
if try to install it, it will want an xdm and will grab the
whole gtk1 series of things that I don't want???)
