You can probably install nullxdm if you don't want a DM, but I believe
that gpe-dm can be installed happily without the gtk1 GPE. (I have it
installed, and I *think* it was installed happily... or is there a
gpe-dm2... I can't remember ATM :)

Don't forget to install gdk-pixbuf-loader-xpm and gdk-pixbuf-loader-png
if you haven't already.

As I found out recently, the /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders file must
have useful information. (There's a gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders command or
something similar, run that and pipe the output to that file if it's not
useful).

I *think* that's the sum of GTK2 things to remember...
