madplay doesn't work as root

I had the idea to use atd for setting up an alarm (as gpe currently does
not have an alarm).

However, if I'm logged into gpe with my normal user account and then do
a su madplay wont work anymore:

# madplay mp3/ring.mp3
MPEG Audio Decoder 0.14.2 (beta) - Copyright (C) 2000-2001 Robert Leslie
audio: esd_open_sound: Success

It says succes but the speaker stays silent. Therefore at doesn't work
either but it's not an atd's problem but a madplay/esd problem.

Any ideas?
