I noticed that sox/play here can cope with .gsm files directly -
however, there's still some problem with the speed, which may mean
that's it's my fault in gpe-soundbite.

As a preliminary hack, the 1.0.2 gpe-soundbite packages will write sound
to standard output if you say 'stream' instead of 'play'. This may or
may not be useful, given that it leaves you with the same kind of
problems in playing back (it doesn't yet write any format headers).
