Oops- I hope this does not start any flame wars :-)
Let me try to give you advice from this side ...
As always, it depends. Not a clear answer, but the best.
It depends on what you would like to do woth your ipaq, your intention.
So it would be a very good idea to know anything about your personal
requirements and expectations, what you want to do with your new device.
Are you an experienced Linux user who would like to show Linux to his friends
and demonstrate how cool a mobile device running X and the typical Linux
flair is ? Is the penguin the mopst important thing ? Then GPE is propably
the closest bet.
To be honest I have lost track regarding what is going on at GPE- OPIE still
has an (slightly unfair :-) advantage and is still more advanced than GPE,
however GPE has propably caught up in several areas.
On the other hand- if you care about pim, usability and a sophisticated look
where Linux features are an option and not required, then OPIE might be more
advisable. IMHO ( and I am far from being neutral here :-) OPIE uses the
advantages of PocketPC (nice look, easy usage) and perfectly transforms them
into the Linux world by developing what Microsoft should have done with
PocketPC: a usable and productive platform.
All features in the PIM suite are by far more advanced than their Microsoft
counter parts.
GPE developers have more programming languages to use chose from while OPIE
benefits from the Zaurus bonus and software archives- as OPIE is binary
compatible.
Some developers don't like the Qt library and its licensing model as used
under OPIE others don't care (like myself).
If you care about synchronisation, OPIE will soon provide full KDE
interoperability as soon as KDE 3.1 is out.
But as mentioned above- it depends on your requirements- if you could tell us
some more about your expectations, it is propably much easier to give a
better advice.
