I've tried both, and here's my subjective, personal,
your-mileage-may-vary verdict:
Opie is more polished and "ready to use" as of last I checked, while
GPE holds more promise for the future.
The main advantage of Opie is that it has all you need (and probably
more) ready today, and the PIM applications are good, possibly on par
with or exceeding anything you will find in the Palm or M$ world. It
also seems to be a little less hungry on resources, especially
permanent storage (flash memory).
GPE has great promises, and a few advantages already. The most
remarkeable feature IMHO is the best every handwriting recognition
(xstroke). It doesn't only beat anything else I've seen, it outclasses
them.
Also worth mentioning is, of course, that GPE uses X, giving you all
the nice features, especially the ability to work across devices (e.g.
run a program on the PDA, but have the display on your desktop).
So, the conclusion for me is: Choose GPE if you are interested in the
future, choose Opie if you want a working PDA today.
