GPE2 new install ...gpe-login2 displays no text

On my iPaq 3765, I've just removed OPIE and left the bare Familiar 0.6.1
system. I've installed gpe-apps2 (I didn't want games) from
http://familiar.handhelds.org/familiar/feeds/unstable/packages/armv4l/Packages

On starting gpe-dm, X comes up with a button (no text) which needs to be
pressed twice. After that, the login screen appears with a combo box, a
text input area with a blinking cursor and a keyboard, but no text.
I've manually reviewed the installed ipkgs and everything appears in
order. I can tap keys on the keyboard, but nothing happens.

Xipaq, Xinit, gpe-login, keylaunch, ipaq-sleep and xkbd processes are
running.

Any ideas what might be missing or what might cause this?
