Opie uses Qt embedded, which was written for use with a framebuffer directly. No X involved.

Running regular opie and X at the same time presents problems with suspend/resume. Known issues. Not sure if this was ever fixed. or if its possible to fix.

As I mentioned before, Holger added X/Opie ability. All you have to do is configure it correctly, and compile away.
But if you use X11 opie, then all the zaurus apps such as is at zsi (http://killefiz.de/zaurus/), won't work. That's the downfall of X11/opie.
Not to mention you have to also install X. :)
