Not sure exactly what you wanted here. From my personal view (being a
GNOME developer since a few years back) I think it would be nice to have
GPE more "gnomish".

Regarding having the apps in GPE talk to each other more there is an
ongoing project that will make this easy:
http://www.freedesktop.org/software/dbus/

It's a lightweight IPC bus for passing messages between different parts
of the desktop.
