I have not yet had a closer look on D-Bus but I would suppose that they
already use something like networking to communicate. So I would guess
that if you switch X11 displays over network you could also switch
communication the same way. Admittedly you add new complexity since you
will then have to look for two communication methods but on the other
side it is less dependant on X11. So basically the question is how
dependant on X11 we want to be.

Generally I would not minde to be as independant as possible since we
would then also be able to use other graphics outputs than X11, like
GTK-FB (quite cool!) or even completely other target where GTK might be
ported to (nano-X, picoGUI, etc.)

Using X11 is great for now but we should avoid beeing too X11 centric.
