Thanks for the update. I should have queried bugzilla before reporting
this.

I did query for the more serious /proc/hal issue, but did not find anything
relevant. It looks like you are using a 3800 unit while I'm using a H3900,
so it is probably 3900 specific since you did not mention this effect (i.e.
you did not see this problem).

The /proc/hal problem is so obvious and serious that I'm surprised no one
else has entered a bug report for it. Since no one has mentioned it yet, I
suspect I'm doing something wrong...

This is known bug (<http://handhelds.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=672>).
Installing libgcc1 will fix that.
