State of GPE

What do developers feel is the state of GPE. In brief, I flashed the
bootgpe2-rc1 image last night and have had quite a few problems. (Some
are image related but some seem GPE related.)

Is GPE supposed to be as usable as OPIE at this point? I'm new to the
ipaq and don't know the history of the two UIs. I use gnome on my
desktop and prefer to use GPE on my ipaq.
