Yes both are slow, I know :). Just note that QT is written in C++ and that
X11/GTK is written in C.
To have an idea of what king of improvement you can have, just try to see
the difference between both toolkit when they are on top of X11 on a
standard X86 PC.
It give you an idea of what could be GPE with direct fb access (Oops,
Matchbox only run on top of x11 ;).

Note that Opie doesn't have the screen that flash when its applications
redraw their graphical interface, etc...
