And remember not to mix storage and representation!
You can pretty easily store inside a database, have SQL access to it and represent your data as XML. Those are three completeley independent things, though they are sometimes mixed up. For example SQLite consists of a database (btrees IIRC) and a SQL interface. It wouldn't be hard to add an XML representation.
