Let me add some word of explanation to this.
GPE is intended to become (or be ;) an as efficient and as fast as possible environment for Linux (or even in general Un*x) PDAs. Especially the most most basic applications that are freequently used on a PDA should be that way so that the user gets best responsiveness out of his/her PDA.
We see that Python-GTK is a very good way to prototype an application or to develop "on the run" that is do on-device development. But we think that for real world complex applications they should be developed with a natively compilable language like C.
On top of the "compilable question we decided in the very beginning that at least the basic applications and libraries which is contained in the CVS/base directory should be C and C only. This was mainly a design decision to make the base system consistant.
