There are things that applications can do to affect the behavior, (see
the xstroke webpage[1]).

However, I've realized that with the current situation, apps. get the
wrong behavior by default too often. The next time I get around to
hacking on xstroke, I think I'll make it do recognition everywhere,
unless an application window has an explicit hint to the effect of,
"don't do recognition on me".

That change should help.
