GNOME 2.x is all GConf based, I think, and that might be a better thing
to adopt. The default GConf backend is all based on CORBA and XML,
which is too heavy for our needs, but it should be possible to invent
something using X properties (perhaps XSettings even) and sqlite,
Berkeley DB or the like.
