Yes, I think this was it.
Even worse than the unspecified legal meaning of "freeware" even
copyright is not clearly definable in a global sense. I think that even
"copyright" can have different meanings in different countries.

I think it's something like GPL'ed software. Someone still owns the
copyright but you can freely use and distribute it.

OK, we should contact the person owning the geocities page.
But I think it makes no sense trying to contact HP. First it would take
a certain amount of work to find the proper contact and it will then
take a long time and certainly a lot of effort to get a clear statement.
Sometimes big companies are nice if you already know the right guys. But
if you don't you are pretty lost...
