There is clearly a balance here: stability vs. change is always hard to
handle....

I mostly raised the issue as we need to plan such a transition, and one
less than a year or more off. But I certainly hope that GPE is "released"
long before that: GPE is certainly getting usable by leaps and bounds right
now.

PB is already playing with GTK2, and I hope to have some time this fall
as well to do so, so we can hopefully be feeding things upstream well
before a conversion of GPE in any case. The one thing we should watch
is the GTK 2.2 schedule, and try to at least get patches in that allow
us to build without the deprecated widgets. I'll try to become more aware
of the GTK schedule over the next month. Owen Taylor already told me he'd
be happy to accept patches that would enable such builds.

Nil's valid concern, which I second as well, is to get something done
that is really usable, and not always chase the "next big thing" and always
be in an unusable state. So there is clearly a tension here, and we need
to figure out the best we can how to balance the competing pressures.
