CVS problem

Hi!
Mabe someone here has an idea because I don't.
I want to create a new directory in our CVS. Here s what I do:

root_at_tool[/home/nils/work/c/arm/gpe/base/libgpe/src]cvs add familiar
nils_at_cvs.handhelds.org's password:
protocol error: directory '/cvs/gpe/base/libgpe/src/familiar' not within
root '/usr/cvs' root_at_tool[/home/nils/work/c/arm/gpe/base/libgpe/src]

The directory where I try this is within a checked-out version of this
module. The directory "familiar" is empty and contains a CVS subdir
afterwards. But the subdir is not created in the repository!

What am I doing wrong here?
Or is there a misinstallation on hh.org's side?
