Application Launcher dies on first use

I believe that this is mmenu. I've got the current (0.8.3) version
installed. Matchbox allows me to install the application launcher and
it appears in the toolbar. Upon tapping it, it dies.

Any ideas how to track down what is causing this? I'd really like to
get access to my screensave controls until gpe-conf is able to do it.
