I'm not sure what else is wrong, but note that some of the packages with
names to do with X are completely unrelated to GPE use, and can in fact
stop it from working. It's possible that you have the old-style X
startup overriding the GPE one, which would explain why you don't get
the GPE login screen or any other GPE applications starting.

(These other X packages still exist in Familiar because some if its
users still want to e.g. use their computer as root the whole time, and
also to do without password security.)
