alarm

I was trying out the version of Madplay in familiar 0.6rc1 that is
supposed to work with esd.

It seems to be giving problems though:

Can't resolve host name "/dev/dsp"!
audio: esd_open_sound: No such file or directory

Has anyone else come across this?
Is there any way to set an audible alarm under GPE at the moment? (I
know that was part of the discussion on Sunday evening - just wondered
if there was a temporary solution in the meantime).
