How to install Linux on HP Jornada 680

Installing Linux on a Jornada is a tricky thing. There are few people out there making an impressive job to make it work - and they don't have too much time to document it step by step.

With these lines I'll try to help them offering you this information. I hope it helps configuring some handheld computers.

I think it can be funny and instructive. Nothing here is extremely complicated, because I wouldn't understand it anyway, so while it takes time, it is a funny way to explore how Linux works.

For this installation you need at least a 128MB CF Card (I really recommend at least 256MB). Most of the soft we will use comes from http://www.dodes.org and http://debian.dodes.org. We'll download some stuff from http://www.debian.org, too.

The kernel is not fully functional at the moment. The touch-screen, the serial port, the modem and the sleep button do not work. But I hope they will in the near future, so don't worry.

For any other information my e-mail address is eduardp@tango04.net. Do not hesitate to contact me for further information or to give me tips. I'm just a user so I'm probably wrong in what I say in these lines.

Debian is the "true GNU/Linux Distro". Debian is maintained by volunteers and is absolutely free. That's why it is the distribution that is ported to more platforms and is known to be the most resistant. What we are going to install on your handheld is more or less the same that you could install on your PC!!
