Jim, just to back nick up on this, I have exactly the same problem (using the
2.44 versions of the files).

For some reason I haven't yet determined (error -3 when decompressing X
demonstration is reported) my X stuff doesn't startup (due to complaints
about binfmt-0000 module not being found) and this reveals the apparent
scheduler bug Nick describes. We just checked and I essentially get exactly
the same output, by simpy resetting the machine and waiting for a few mins.
