PM Efforts
I'm now trying to get the 720 fully operational with power management. I'm using Compaq OHH BootLoader, Rev 2-19-28. Here is my .config file. It does not work and I get lots of nasty console output while booting. Hope this helps someone!
General Comments
I'm afraid I'm pretty clueless on other jornada models. Please look at the mailing list archives for answers to questions you may have.
2.4.17-rmk4 working with familiar v0.5 and the unstable feed. Touchscreen not right and no sound or power management. Otherwise it is quite functional.
2.4.17-rmk5-<HEAD> was checked out of cvs today with new jornada720 patches and it works!
Still working well (read 'stable') as of 3/4/2002.
I hacked the bottom cf slot and now have a udrive installed (dremmelized it ;)
For those interested in changing their jornada720 os to linux with the familiar distribution, please e-mail your request to
John Ankcorn at jca@alum.mit.edu
Please understand that there are a limited number of suitable roms available and that this is very much a test for HP as well.

Bootloader
- CRL Bootloader supported (as of Rev. 2-18-2). Serial console at 115,000.
- There are reports that blob now works as well.
Video
- Video chip is the Epson 1356f. Screen resolution is 640 x 240.
- Video seems to be functioning well and works under x (Xipaq) although some optimizations are possibly needed for X.
- I tried the framebuffer-console to see if a text console may be used but no text actually printed.
The cursor however was present and moved around as if text was being printed.
OB
Audio
- Sound supported through SA1111 and UDA1341.
- Sound available in 2.4.17-rmk5-hh (follow link at top for details).
- Sound is actually stereo, not mono (my headphone jack is bad).
- Current arch/arm/def-config/jornada720 has correct settings for sound support compilation.
Keyboard
- The keyboard functions quite well.
- The only problems I've noticed are that I can't generate characters that are in yellow
on the keyboard.
Touchscreen
- The touchscreen now works in 2.4.17-rmk5-hh (follow link at top for details).
- Wonky in 2.4.17-rmk4.
Expansion
- pcmcia works fine (2.4.17-rmk4). I've only tested nics, however.
- Both wired and wireless nics work well (same performance as on iPAQ).
- I do see network errors in 2.4.17-rmk5-hh (follow link at top for details) under heavy loads.
- CF slot works fine. I even managed to squeeze in a udrive with a hack on the cover.
- The slot above pcmcia is a smartcard reader. General linux info is located here
JFFS2
- Stable in 2.4.17-rmk4-hh.
- Now seems stable in 2.4.17-rmk5-hh. There are old reports of corruption if flashdisk %80+ full
or under heavy network stress while writing to fs.
Power Management
- Unsupported currently afaik.
Software
Mutt
- ipkg available in the familiar unstable feed.
- Works well for reading e-mails but segfaults when trying to send (I've tried using ssmtp as exim-replacement).
- Also segfaults when trying to use on-line help ("?").
Meager Support Area
Obligatory Screenshots
- Screenshot of blackbox desktop.
- Another screenshot of ion wm with rxvt-aa.
- SSH'd into home box and was on #handhelds.org and #jornada720 via bitchx for this one.
- Dillo screenshot of browsing slashdot. Dillo really works nicely (but my kingdom for a touchscreen :)
- Mutt screenshot (nb: run natively. swiped from debian-arm and ipkg'd)
Tools
- Ever-so-slightly modified raw2ppm for jornada (source and x86 binary) is available here
- mkfs.jffs2 version 1.17. Instructions for using it are here.
